Maine Maple Sunday
Maine Maple Sunday is a special open house date for most sugarmakers in the State of Maine. SMMSA strives to be sure that the public finds the sugarhouses (some of them remote) of our members.

At Thurston And Peters Sugarhouse (TAPS) in West Newfield, you will find Harry and Debi Hartford making maple syrup the "new fashioned" way with "old fashioned" hospitality!
 
Maine Maple Sunday from 8 AM-5 PM.
Also, open weekends through April 5th (9 AM-5 PM)
or by appointment for tours and samples.
 
In the early 1900's, Harry Hartford's relatives, the Thurston's and Peter's made maple syrup on a wood fired evaporator after the sap was collected in buckets and hauled by horses.  Today, the sap is collected in huge stainless steel tanks after traveling along  hundreds of feet of plastic tubing
attached to a vacuum pump.  Reverse osmosis is used to separate the sugar concentrate from the permeate water and syrup is made in a 3' X 10' evaporator.

We will be doing the Maine Maple Sunday thing for something like the 16th consecutive year...with the same things happening as usual..  Boiling, of course, sugarbush tours with sap tasting from the last 50 of our buckets, pipeline inspections, falling into the babbling brook for adventurers of all ages, tree ID contest, syrup on ice cream, and hopefully-- syrup to buy! Our trails into and through the woods are dragged and packed throughout the winter so they usually offer very nice walking conditons for folks visiting, and for us, too.  We always do cream and candy, but that might not pan out this year. Animals in the barnyard and the big, old barn also are highlights for visitors. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather.  Even though the syrup production was nil for the last 2 years on Maine Maple Sunday, the weather was fantastic, and we took lots of orders for syrup that customers came back to pick up once it was available.

We will be serving breakfast from 8am to 11am. All you can eat. Pancakes, homemade sausage, bacon, coffee, milk and juice. Adults $6.00, children under 12 $3.00.

There will be a horse drawn wagon ride from 8am until 2pm Adults $2, children $1.00.

We will have jigs and reels music from 1pm until 3 pm free.

We will run the evaporator from 1pm until 4pm and later if we have lots of sap that day.

We will be selling maple popcorn, candies, cookies, breads, fudge, maple butter and anything else we can make with maple syrup.
